Actos Side Effects

What is Actos?

Takeda Pharmaceuticals is the manufacturer of this prescription drug that is used by adults suffering from type 2 Diabetes. It was approved for use by the FDA in 1999 and has been under study for a possible link to the development of bladder cancer tumors. The tumors are especially prone to occur in persons that have been taking the drug for a period of one year or longer. The scientific name for Actos is Pioglitazone HCL, an ingredient also present in other drugs named ACTOplus met, ACTOplus met XR, and duetact. All are said to help persons with type 2 diabetes by controlling blood sugar. The drug is recommended to be used along with a proper diet and exercise plan for diabetes control.

Potential Actos Side Effects

Besides a possible link to bladder cancer, Actos users may experience many side effects from taking Actos medications. These include the following:
• Weight gain – this may occur in part to fluid retention and edema
• Flu-like symptoms – muscle pain, headache, sort throat and sinus infection
• Limb pain – similar to arthritis
• Gastrointestinal problems – diarrhea or nausea

Other Actos Precautions

Do not take Actos if you will undergo x-rays that use injectable dyes. Actos may also interact negatively with other medications, supplements and vitamins. Any transfer of side effects of Actos upon nursing infants remains unknown; Actos is not recommended for pregnant women.

Should You Worry About Actos?

Drug regulators in Europe have recommended caution regarding the use of Actos. It is suggested the drug be used only when other drugs fail to perform as needed. They have not issued an Actos recall as yet, nor has there been one in the United States. Drug professionals do admit the possibility of a direct link between Actos usage and bladder cancer. The FDA has made public information that long term use of Actos beyond one year has been associated with bladder cancer.
